Life After Hurricane Dorian – Thanking God for the Many Blessings

September 1, 2019 – the day the world changed on Elbow Cay. The worst or second worst hurricane in recorded history, depending on how you measure it. One way or the other, Dorian stayed way too long over our beautiful cay and packed way to much wind power and hidden tornadoes. Abaconians have been dealing with hurricanes for generations, but nothing prepared anyone for what was coming, came, over-stayed and left a path of devastation in its wake.

But we are resilient. Right after the worst was over, those who stayed, and that was the majority, got to work and started to clear debris, check everyone was OK (no fatalities), and organize food and water supplies, as well as fuel for the few generators operating. The community spirit of Hope Town shone through the devastation. Volunteers also came in early to help at the time most desperately needed, helping with clean-up, roof repair, meals and anything that needed doing.

Despite the widespread devastation, unlike any hurricane before, including Floyd in 1999, St. James stood largely undamaged, as a symbol of hope and community.

The church has been used as a place to hold community meetings to discuss and organize relief and rebuilding efforts.

There is also more good news. The Sunday school addition that had been planned for and mostly completed prior to Dorian survived as well and was able to be officially opened not too long after by Rev. Culmer, the President of the Bahamas Conference of Methodist Churches. It is indeed a bright spot, pointing the way to the future, when life returns to what it was, but not just what it was before, but even better, more united and more vibrant, with a deep gratitude that all survived this devastating hurricane, and that we live to worship God all the more joyously and deeply.

We now have a strong, shining light to help guide Hope Town to a bright future.

New Choir Season Underway!

St. James has been resounding once again with the heavenly voices of its choir, whose members come from far and wide to celebrate in word and song each Sunday at this little church by the sea. Most recently, the choir has benefitted from the expert guidance of Mr. Fred DeHaven, a world-renowned choir master and organist, currently at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, Grosse Pointe, Michigan, USA.

The most recent selections can be viewed at our YouTube Channel (go to the tab at the top of this page to reach this channel).

Worship at St. James

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 8.50.26 AMEach Sunday, families come to our 9:30 Family Service, with it’s Sunday School for the young ones, and this is followed by our 11:00 Worship, with choir (in season).

_MG_6121Our services are full of joyous song and inspiring messages for life, and worship of a higher power than ourselves.

We are blessed by the light that surrounds us in this house of worship, and the special energy of love and acceptance that we all feel in this hallowed place, dedicated to the worship of God for almost 200 years.

IMG_3621St. James is symbolically open to God and to the world, a fact we are reminded of as we look out at the beautiful sky and ocean, part of God’s great creation. The light within and the light without join in celebration and song.

And we are blessed during the winter season with a choir that adds to the spirit of worship and lifts our hearts and souls. Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 8.58.40 AM(see selected recordings at http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA69XhZRAyR9ZDoK3wvxpHQ/videos)

Welcome to St. James

screen-shot-2013-10-27-at-7-54-35-am.pngIt’s the start of a new season after the summer break. St. James Methodist Church in Hope Town, Abaco, The Bahamas, is getting itself ready to welcome back all our regular guests from away, second home owners, and new arrivals, for another year of worship. While the main church for the local community for almost 200 years, St. James also opens its doors to all those who visit and reside in the Abacos and wish to share in our celebration of God. The world, as big as it is, comes together every Sunday in St. James in the form of people from every corner of the globe and every path of life. This tiny cay between the Atlantic and the Caribbean sea with its tiny church is a large spiritual home to many, who come seeking for peace and tranquility of spirit and soul, as much as mind and body.

Matt. 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matt. 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
